Meet Lorraine Cooney, Specialist IBS & Gut Health Dietitian

From Sufferer to IBS Specialist
If you’re here, chances are you’re tired of battling unpredictable symptoms, food anxiety and frustration. I get it—because I’ve been there too.
I’m Lorraine Cooney, an Irish Registered Dietitian, and I’ve dedicated my career to helping people take control of their gut health and find lasting relief from IBS. But my passion for gut health goes beyond professional expertise—having faced my own struggles, I understand firsthand what truly works, both in theory and in practice.
For years, I faced relentless gut issues with no real answers. I was passed from one healthcare professional to another, told to ‘try the low FODMAP diet,’, ‘just drink more water’, or ‘take these laxatives’—but nothing made a lasting difference.
The frustration of feeling unheard, dismissed, and stuck in a cycle of discomfort was beyond exhausting. And the worst part? As a dietitian, I should have had the answers. I did all the right things—upped the fibre, drank the water, got my daily exercise in and even tried all the highly-rated mindfulness apps. But I was still stuck. The bloating, the unpredictability, the constant wondering why I couldn’t go! That’s when I knew I had to dig deeper.
A Science-Backed Approach That Actually Works
Determined to find real answers, I specialised in gut health, exploring the science behind digestion, symptom triggers and the powerful role of the gut-brain connection in achieving long-term relief.
This journey led me to train in gut-directed hypnotherapy—a powerful tool that targets the gut-brain axis to help manage IBS symptoms at their root. I’ve also written two books on gut health—one on FODMAPs and the other on constipation—sharing my expertise in a way that’s practical, effective and easy to implement.
Now, I take a comprehensive yet flexible approach to managing IBS—one that goes beyond restrictive diets, empowering people to understand their gut, feel good and eat with confidence—without unnecessary food rules.

What I Learned Changed Everything
Through years of keeping up with the fast-paced research and helping hundreds of IBS clients, I realised that most IBS advice is missing a key piece of the puzzle.
IBS isn’t just about food—it’s about how your gut and brain communicate and why stress, anxiety and gut miscommunication can trigger symptoms just as much as food.
Long-term food restrictions won’t fix IBS—true relief comes from optimising gut health, nourishing your microbiome and creating a lifestyle that enhances symptom control instead of limiting it.
Stress plays a role, but it’s not the whole picture—you need targeted gut-brain strategies that retrain your gut’s response, so you’re not stuck in a cycle of fear, symptoms and restriction.
This led me to develop a tailored, science-backed approach that blends nutrition, gut-brain strategies and personalised support—helping people finally take control of their gut health for good.
